This drastic cut has <strong>crippled consumer interest in rooftop solar<\/strong>, threatening California\u2019s clean energy goals. With these changes, the payback period for installing solar has doubled from 6\u20138 years to as long as 16\u2014effectively <strong>gutting the rooftop solar industry<\/strong>.<\/p><p>PG&amp;E\u2019s aggressive rate hikes, including a proposed <strong>income-based fixed charge<\/strong>, unfairly penalize efficient households while rewarding high energy users. Some households went days without power, with <strong>no clear restoration timeline<\/strong>. One resident told me her home has lost electricity <strong>38 times in just the past 13 months<\/strong>.<\/p><p>These storms exposed what many of us already knew: <strong>PG&amp;E\u2019s infrastructure is fragile, its management is unaccountable, and its priorities are not with the people.<\/strong> New power hookups take nearly a year. Solar installations are delayed indefinitely because PG&amp;E lacks basic components like transformers. Families invest thousands into clean energy\u2014only to be left in limbo.<\/p><p>We\u2019re dealing with a monopoly that threatens our energy security and economic stability.<\/p><h3><strong>It\u2019s time to turn PG&amp;E into a public utility.<\/strong><\/h3><p>Electricity powers our homes, schools, and businesses\u2014it\u2019s too important to be left in the hands of a profit-driven monopoly. Public ownership would ensure decisions are made in the <strong>interest of ratepayers, not shareholders.<\/strong><\/p><h3><strong>Still unsure? Just look at the facts:<\/strong><\/h3><ul><li>Since <strong>2010<\/strong>, PG&amp;E has been found guilty of <strong>over 90 felonies<\/strong>, including <strong>84 counts of involuntary manslaughter<\/strong>.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>It has paid more than <strong>$25.5 billion<\/strong> in wildfire damages since 2017.<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Despite this, PG&amp;E remains <strong>highly profitable<\/strong>\u2014grossing <strong>$18 billion<\/strong> in the 12 months ending September 2023.<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>How?<br \/><\/strong>\u00a0They filed for bankruptcy on the backs of taxpayers, then <strong>raised rates<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The state guarantees PG&amp;E a <strong>10\u201312% profit<\/strong> on all capital expenditures. So when PG&amp;E spends <strong>$6 million to underground a single mile of cable<\/strong>, the cost is passed on to us\u2014and they profit from it. The more they spend, the more they earn. Waste is rewarded.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, they pour millions into <strong>TV ads<\/strong>\u2014despite having no competitors. Why advertise? To sell a narrative, not electricity.<\/p><h3><strong>And now, the latest insult: income-based billing.<\/strong><\/h3><p>PG&amp;E is shifting to a pricing system where your rates depend on your <strong>income<\/strong>, not your <strong>usage<\/strong>. Conserve energy? Doesn\u2019t matter. Get a raise at work? Your bill could go up.<br \/>\u00a0This destroys incentives for conservation and penalizes working families.<\/p><h3><strong>Enough is enough.<\/strong><\/h3><p>PG&amp;E has:<\/p><ul><li>Failed to provide reliable service<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Undermined solar adoption<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Endangered communities with reckless mismanagement<br \/><br \/><\/li><li>Exploited ratepayers for profit<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><p>It\u2019s time for <strong>a new path forward<\/strong>\u2014one that prioritizes <strong>affordability, safety, clean energy, and public accountability.<\/strong><\/p><p>We must <strong>municipalize PG&amp;E<\/strong> and put our energy future in the hands of the people\u2014not a corporation with a criminal record and a profit motive.<\/p><p>Let\u2019s stand together against corporate greed.
